About Us

The Department of Music is located in beautifully converted stables, between Chichester and Petworth, in the stunning South Downs National Park. With excellent links from West Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. 

We are committed to delivering the opposite experience of what you will find in typical hi-fi shops; after all, it's not 1985 (although Brothers in Arms is still a great album). If music is inherently upbeat, so should learning about the best way to reproduce it. 

You can buy a box from anyone, but if you want to work with people just like you, who listen to the same music, who want you to play whatever you like, who serve great coffee, tea, wine, or a single malt (we keep late hours to suit you), then The Department of Music is your audio destination store. 

It's like the hi-fi shop that you would open -  welcoming, relaxed, ego-free, where people hear things in their favourite music that they have never experienced. We deliver and install your hi-fi in your home without charge (though a cup of tea would be nice). 

In simple terms, if we can't honestly recommend a product, we don't stock it.
